Frequently Asked Questions
Crash Pad Questions
No. Air mattresses are wobbly, unstable, fragile, and feel terrible to land on. We know this well because we tested air mattresses early in our R&D and learned a lot about what not to do with our crash pad.
Our patent pending crash pad design is much more stable and supportive than an air mattress, and its outer material is more durable. The inner structure is comprised of a tightly woven bed of ripstop nylon with thousands of vertical supports. Those supports offer significantly more stability than an air mattress, and the ripstop nylon adds a ton of durability (necessary for the pad to survive the daily abuse of bouldering).
Most of the force of a fall is absorbed by the crash pad, but yes, our crash pad is a little bit bouncy. Most of our customers find this to be acceptable, especially given the ultra portability of our pad. We have customers who regularly take big falls onto our pads without issue. Check out the testimonials on our home page for more first-hand experiences.
If you're on the fence, try it out risk-free. We offer free returns before you use the pad outside. Check out our guarantee for more info.

Our crash pad is no ordinary inflatable. We combine a tightly woven ripstop nylon interior structure with a flexible, robust TPU outer coating. This pad is designed to survive the daily abuse of bouldering.
If you unintentionally make friends with a cactus or other particularly abrasive object, you may cause a pin hole / slow leak. We include a patch kit with each crash pad to cover you for this scenario. Check out Caring for Your Crash Pad for more information.
Each pad takes 30 seconds to inflate and 30 seconds to deflate with our Rapid Air Pump, or 60-90 seconds with the included foot pump.
Our customers commonly love using our crash pads in these scenarios:
- Bringing "the whole gym floor" (commonly up to 4 Sick Sequence crash pads) in the trunk of your car to complement a foam pad at a roadside boulder.
- Reaching alpine or backcountry boulders with a long approach.
- Travel: carry-on bags for air travel, train travel, or van life.
- Combining other sports with bouldering: cycling, motorcycling, backpacking, and even paragliding.
